Mothers: Masters of Improvisation

October 23, 2013 by Jo 2 Comments

If one thing is certain in motherhood, it’s that one should always expect the unexpected.  Life in general rarely goes according to plan and when you add a small human being into the mix…well, throw out the script because you’re about to get a crash course in improv!

Motherhood is like an improv show because no two days are exactly alike.  You never truly know what each day is going to bring.

being a mother

I think if Forrest Gump had been a mother, the popular quote would have read, “Life is like a diaper, you never know what you’re gonna get.”  I suppose chocolate conjures up a nicer image and more pleasant feelings, but hey, motherhood isn’t always made of those things.

Whether it be taming a toddler tantrum or diverting a near dinner failure, mothers are the MacGyvers of life.  Give a mom a paper clip and a piece of chewing gum and she’ll hand you back a mended pair of pants, a book that was lost ten years ago, and an award winning science fair project.

Mom, you are amazing.  On the days when nothing seems to go right, remember you’re not alone.  And you’ve got this.

You can do this.  It might mean throwing out your schedule for a day.  Or releasing yourself from unrealistic expectations.  Just give yourself some grace and know you’re doing a great job.  No one can love your children the way you do.  It is not a mistake that you are their mother.

You’re going to have nice clean days.  And well, there are other days that are going to be just plain stinky.  Just like with improv you may not know where things are going, trust yourself  and God and know that ultimately it’s going to end up alright.

    YES! YES! YES!
These true words need to be given to new mothers! Thanks Jo Ann for the great reminder. Life outside the box is totally exciting and delightful… for the most part.
